April 2025
On our New Mexico Child Support page, we added a link to updated child support guidelines in the question How will the judge calculate child support? in English and Spanish.
To prepare our Iowa Custody section for translation into Spanish, we revised all 32 questions for clarity and accuracy. We also created the new subsection Steps to file for custody to reorganize the steps into six separate questions, making it easier for users to find the information they need:
To prepare our Rhode Island Restraining Orders page for translation into Spanish, we reviewed and revised 17 questions for clarity in the following sections:
- Extreme Risk Protection Orders
- Moving to Another State with a Restraining Order
- Enforcing your Out-Of-State Order in Rhode Island
We also created one new question, Will I be notified before the order expires?, to explain law enforcement’s obligation to notify “interested parties” before an extreme risk protection order expires.
On our Abuse Using Technology page, we completely re-wrote all eight questions in our Electronic Surveillance and Impersonation sections with the help of NNEDV’s Safety Net team. We also created a new question in our Electronic Surveillance section called How can an abuser misuse electronic surveillance? Spanish translation coming soon.
March 2025
Based on new laws that took effect 1/1/25, we did the following in our California Housing Laws section:
- Created three new questions:
- Revised Who does this law protect? to explain the new tenant screening protections that prohibit a landlord from denying a rental application or adding extra conditions to the lease due to various factors related to domestic violence.

In our New Jersey Restraining Orders section, we updated the link for the New Jersey Courts’ Self-Help Firearm Removal web page in the question What types of orders are there? How long do they last?
We revised the following three questions in our West Virginia Restraining Orders section:
- Who can get a protective order? to improve clarity;
- Can a minor file for an order? to expand upon the procedures relevant to a minor filing for a protective order; and
- Can I file for an order against a minor? to expand upon the procedures relevant to someone filing for a protective order against a minor.
Based on new laws that took effect 1/1/25, we did the following:
- In our California Custody section, we revised Am I eligible for an ex parte temporary custody order? to add that when evaluating if there is an immediate risk to the child, the judge:
- must consider whether a parent is prohibited from having firearms and ammunition and whether the parent has access to either; and
- can order limited visitation –either supervised or virtual– or can suspend or deny visitation to the parent who presents a risk.
- In our California Restraining Orders section, we did the following:
- In our Domestic Violence section:
- Created the new question In which county do I file?
- Revised Step 1: Get the “Request for Domestic Violence Restraining Order.” to link to the new question and to add the specific name of the petition in the question title and answer.
- In our Gun Violence section:
- Revised What is a gun violence restraining order? to explain that the judge can issue an order even if the respondent does not own firearms, ammunition, or other deadly weapons at the time that the judge is making his/her decision.
- Revised How will the judge make a decision? to include multiple new factors a judge can consider, as well as minor changes in wording to other factors.
- In our California Workplace Protections section, we:
- Revised seven questions based on changes to the law that protects an employee who is a victim or whose family member is a victim of “a qualifying act of violence.”
- Created the new question What additional protections are there if I work in a larger workplace?

We also added seven related statutes to our Selected California Statutes page.
We updated the link to the HUD VAWA self-certification form in the question If my landlord tries to evict me because of a lease violation, such as a nuisance, what should I do? in our VAWA Housing Protections section.
To prepare our Rhode Island Crimes and Download Court Forms pages for translation into Spanish, we reviewed all the information and links for accuracy and clarity.
In our Vermont Parental Kidnapping section, we updated the link to the Defense Center for Criminalized Survivors in the question I took my kids away from the other parent due to danger but I worry that I may be charged with custodial interference. What can I do? to help victims and survivors find assistance.
On our Montana Crimes page, we updated the links to the Office of Crime Victims website, which offers a variety of programs and resources, as well as the link to the Crime Victim Compensation website.
We revised the question Is spoofing illegal? in our Abuse Using Technology section, to add information about the Truth in Caller ID Act. We also added the new related statute to our Selected Federal Statutes page. Revisions made in English; Spanish coming soon!
We added three statutes to our Selected Louisiana Statutes page related to adult protective services and protections for victims of sexual assault.
We added a statute related to stage gun laws to our Selected Virginia Statutes page.
We added six resources and updated the information for 102 other resources on our Illinois Courthouse Locations page in English and Spanish.
To prepare our Rhode Island Sexual Assault Protective Orders and Workplace Violence Restraining Orders sections for translation into Spanish, we did the following:
- Created two new questions explaining where to file for, and how to change or extend, a sexual assault protective order:
- Created two new questions explaining what a workplace violence restraining order is and the legal reasons why an employer can file for one:
- Reviewed and revised 12 other questions for clarity.
To prepare our Iowa State Gun Laws for translation into Spanish, we revised 13 questions for clarity and accuracy, and created three new questions that help explain Iowa’s laws more clearly:
- What is the definition of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence in Iowa?
- Is a permit required to own or carry a gun in Iowa?
- I am a victim of domestic violence and the abuser carries a gun. Is that legal?
We added seven new statutes related to the possession of weapons and operating a vehicle under the influence to our Selected Iowa Statutes page.
We updated the information for 74 resources on our Colorado Courthouse Locations page in English and Spanish.
We updated the information for 115 resources on our Missouri Courthouse Locations page in English and Spanish.
We translated into Spanish recent revisions made in English to our Rhode Island Suing an Abuser for Money page.
We translated into Spanish recent revisions made in English to the following questions in our Puerto Rico Restraining Orders section:
- What is the legal definition of domestic violence in Puerto Rico?
- What protections can I get in a protection order?
- I was not granted a protection order. What are my options?
- What is the legal definition of stalking?
- What protections can I get in a protection from stalking order?
We also translated into Spanish the new question “I was not granted a protection order. What are my options?” in our Orders of Protection for the Welfare and Protection of Children and Protection from Stalking Orders sections.
February 2025
We added two crimes related to possession of firearms to our Louisiana Crimes page, and added a statute related to violation of orders to our Selected Louisiana Statutes page.
We added four statutes to our Selected Nevada Statutes page related to local court rules for mediation.
We added two statutes related to the enforcement of orders to our Selected Massachusetts Statutes page.
We added a statute related to domestic violence court proceedings to our Selected West Virginia Statutes page.
On our Nevada Custody page, we updated the question Who gets sent to mediation? If I am a domestic violence victim, do I have to do mediation? in English and Spanish to more accurately reflect the reasons that a case may not be appropriate for mediation.
We added a statute related to court proceedings to our Selected Pennsylvania Statutes page.
We added a statute related to workplace protections to our Selected Florida Statutes page.
We added the crime of “terroristic threatening in the first degree” to our Hawaii Crimes page. We also added this crime and the related legal definition of “terroristic threatening” to the Selected Hawaii Statutes page.
We added 11 crimes related to assault, robbery, cruelty to animals, threats of violence, and weapons to our Tennessee Crimes page in English; Spanish coming soon!
To prepare our Iowa Restraining Orders section for translation into Spanish, we revised 51 questions for clarity and accuracy. This included separating the questions How much does it cost? and Do I need a lawyer? to make is easier for survivors to find the information they’re looking for.
We also created the following new questions in our Elder Abuse Protective Orders section to expand and clarify the information for survivors:
We added four new crimes related to assault and extortion to our Massachusetts Crimes page and our Selected Massachusetts Statutes page.
We added the crime “violation of protective order” to our Maine Crimes page in English and Spanish, and added this crime to our Selected Maine Statutes page.
In our Rhode Island Domestic Violence Restraining Orders section, we:
- Created a new question called How will the judge decide if my dating or living together relationship qualifies for a domestic abuse restraining order? that explains the factors a judge considers when determining whether certain relationships qualify for this type of order.
- Created four new questions that define certain acts for the purposes of getting a restraining order:
- Revised 25 questions to clarify the requirements and the process for getting a domestic abuse restraining order and to make it easier for users to find the information they need.
- Added charts to the questions What types of restraining orders are there? How long do they last? and Am I eligible? Do I file in family court or district court?, to make it easier to understand the types of orders available and when to file in family or district court.
In our Alaska Restraining Orders section we did the following:
- Revised the question What is the legal definition of domestic violence? based on 2024 legislative changes that went into effect January 1, 2025. These changes expand the crimes that qualify as domestic violence for getting a protective order, to add unlawful contact and interfering with the report of a crime involving domestic violence.
- Revised two questions to improve readability:
We added the crimes of “unlawful contact” in the first and second degree to our Alaska Crimes page as well as our Selected Alaska Statutes page.
We translated into Spanish the question What are the steps to file for custody? in our Puerto Rico Custody section.
In our Choosing and Working with a Lawyer section, we revised How do I pick the right attorney? What questions do I ask? to add new questions to ask an attorney related to retainers and to delete some others. Changes made in English and Spanish.
January 2025
We simplified the language on our Rhode Island Suing an Abuser for Money page to make it easier to understand and we revised the section about small claims court to clarify that the small claims court limit of $5,000 applies to cases involving a contract, a retail sale, or services provided. We also updated the link to small claims court information on the Rhode Island Judiciary website. Spanish translation of this section and the entire state is coming soon!
We translated into Spanish three newly added questions in our Ohio Custody section:
- What words and phrases might the judge use in an Ohio custody case?
- Can I get temporary custody with a domestic violence protection order? How long will it last?
- Can the judge order supervised visits for the abuser as part of my domestic violence protection order?
We also translated into Spanish five new questions in our Divorce section:

In our Tennessee State Gun Laws section, we translated into Spanish the new questions What is the definition of a “crime of violence”? and How does Tennessee define “firearm” and “handgun”?, as well as revisions to the following four questions:
- I am a victim of domestic violence and the abuser has a gun. Is that legal?
- If the abuser was convicted of a crime, can s/he have or buy a gun?
- I do not have a protection order against the abuser, and s/he has not been convicted of a crime. Is there anything I can do?

In our Tennessee Restraining Orders section, we translated into Spanish recent revisions to the questions What is the legal definition of stalking? and Who can file for an elderly or vulnerable adult protection order?
In our Kansas Custody section, we translated into Spanish recent revisions to the question Can a grandparent, step-parent, or sibling, or other non-parent get visitation? as well as the following three new questions:

We translated into Spanish recent revisions made to two questions on our North Carolina Workplace Protections page:
- Can an employer take action against me based on the fact that I am a victim of domestic violence who took time off to file for a protective order?
- If my employer did discriminate against me because I got a protective order, what can I do?
We also translated into Spanish recent revisions made to four questions in our North Carolina Custody section:
We added two crimes related to aggravated abuse and seduction of minors to our Puerto Rico Crimes page. We also added four new statutes to our Selected Puerto Rico Statutes page.
We added four additional locations of Community Legal Aid to our Ohio Legal Assistance page in English and Spanish.
We added 10 statutes related to gun laws, felony penalties, custody, and service of process to our Selected Ohio Statutes page.
Based on legislative changes that took effect in October 2024, we did the following:
- In our Massachusetts State Gun Laws page, we revised three questions to reflect the amended reasons that a person can be prohibited from getting a firearms license;
- In our Massachusetts Extreme Risk Protection Orders section, we revised:
- What is an extreme risk protection order? to remove the requirement that an extreme risk protection order can only be filed against a person who has a license to carry firearms or a firearm identification card;
- What protections can I get in an extreme risk protection order? to add that the judge will issue a warrant for law enforcement to seize firearms that are not surrendered within 24 hours; and
- Three questions to remove the specific reference to “rifles, shotguns, machine guns, and weapons” since the law now uses the term “firearms” to represent all types.
- In our Massachusetts Abuse Prevention Orders page, we revised Step 4: Service of process and Can the abuser have a gun? to remove the specific reference to “rifles, shotguns, machine guns, and weapons” since the law now uses the term “firearms” to represent all types; and
- Added a newly enacted statute related to gun laws to our Selected Massachusetts Statutes page.

We updated outdated links and information in English and Spanish on our Helping Others - Doctors and Health Care Workers page.
December 2024
We translated into Spanish 24 crimes recently added to our Tennessee Crimes page.
Based on 2024 legislative changes, we did the following in our Puerto Rico Restraining Orders section:
- Revised the following questions to reflect that domestic violence-related laws now specifically reference digital and cyber abuse; ask that an out of state defendant with a protection order against them notifies the police within two (2) hours of arriving in the Island; and direct judges to explain why they did or did not grant a protection order as part of their decision.
- Three questions in our Protection Orders for Domestic Violence section:
- Two questions in our Protection from Stalking Orders section:
- Created the new question “I was not granted a protection order. What are my options?” in our Orders of Protection for the Welfare and Protection of Children and Protection from Stalking Orders sections, to include information for survivors who are not able to get a restraining order but may have an option through a different legal process available on the Island.

We translated into Spanish our new Michigan Extreme Risk Protective Orders section.

On our Washington Extreme Risk Protection Orders page, we translated into Spanish the new question Can the respondent terminate the order? as well as revisions made to eight other questions.

We added the following three new questions to the Ohio Custody page to define common words and phrases used in Ohio custody cases and to explain when a judge can give temporary custody and supervised visits as part of a domestic violence protection order:

We expanded our Ohio Divorce section adding the following five new questions to explain what a legal separation is (and how it’s similar to and different from a divorce) and how property gets divided under Ohio’s equitable distribution law:

- What is marital property?
- What is separate property?
- How will the judge decide what is a fair division of marital property?

We created three new questions on our Wisconsin Divorce page related to property division:

We created a new Northern Mariana Islands Restraining Orders page including 32 new questions about orders of protection in the CNMI.

To expand the information in our Mississippi Child Support section, we created the following four new questions:

We did the following on our North Carolina Workplace Protections page:
- Revised Can an employer take action against me based on the fact that I am a victim of domestic violence who took time off to file for a protective order? to clarify that the law extends beyond protection from being fired. It also protects against demotion, discipline, and being denied a promotion due to being a victim.
- Revised If my employer did discriminate against me because I got a protective order, what can I do? to streamline the information, making it easier to understand.

We revised our U.S. Virgin Islands Suing an Abuser for Money page based on a new law creating a civil right of action for victims of non-consensual dissemination of private sexual images.
On our U.S. Virgin Islands Child Support page we revised How is the amount of child support determined? based on a legislative change that creates a default amount of support if the parent does not submit income information to the court.
Due to changes in the law that adds non-consensual dissemination of private sexual images to the definition of domestic violence, we revised What is considered to be “domestic violence” under the law? on our U.S. Virgin Islands Workplace Protections page and What is the legal definition of domestic violence? on our Restraining Orders page.
We revised Who can get a domestic violence restraining order? on our U.S. Virgin Islands Restraining Orders page to clarify which household members can qualify.
We added the crime of “non-consensual dissemination of private sexual images” to our U.S. Virgin Islands Crimes page, as well as seven related statutes to our Selected U.S. Virgin Islands Statutes page.
On our Alaska Crimes page, we:
- Revised the following questions which were previously located in the Victim Compensation section on our website:
- Created the new question Will a hearing be held to determine how much compensation is awarded?
We also added six statutes related to crime victim compensation, sex trafficking, and sexual exploitation to our Selected Alaska Statutes page.
On our Tennessee Restraining Orders page, we revised What is the legal definition of stalking? based on 2024 legislative changes that renumbered certain sections. On our Tennessee State Gun Laws page, we:
- Created the new questions What is the definition of a “crime of violence”? and How does Tennessee define “firearm” and “handgun”?
- Revised the following questions based on 2024 legislative changes that revised the categories of who cannot have firearms:
- I am a victim of domestic violence and the abuser has a gun. Is that legal?
- If the abuser was convicted of a crime, can s/he have or buy a gun?
- I do not have a protection order against the abuser, and s/he has not been convicted of a crime, is there anything I can do?

In our Ohio Domestic Violence / Dating Violence Protective Orders section, we revised What protections can I get in a domestic violence or dating violence protection order? to add that the judge has the power to order the petitioner to seek counseling as well as ordering the abuser to do so. Changes made in English and Spanish.
We revised our Kansas Suing an Abuser for Money page in English and Spanish to update the small claims court limit from $4,000 to $10,000.
In our Kansas Custody section, we revised Can a grandparent, step-parent, or sibling, or other non-parent get visitation? to add additional information about non-parents applying. We also created the following three new questions related to non-parent visitation:
- What do I have to prove to get non-parent visitation?
- What information will I need to include in a petition for non-parent visitation?
- How will a judge make a decision about non-parent visitation?
Finally, we added 22 statutes related to visitation to our Selected Kansas Statutes page. Questions added in English; Spanish coming soon!
Based on 2024 legislative changes, we revised four questions in our North Carolina Custody section to explain that when filing for custody or visitation, the petitioner must now disclose convictions for various sexually violent crimes in their application. We added four crimes related to sexual exploitation of minors and peeping to our North Carolina Crimes page and four related statutes to our Selected North Carolina Statutes page.
We added a resource, ValorUS, to our California Statewide Programs page in English and Spanish.
We restructured our West Virginia Crimes page by creating a chart that lists the crime names on one side and the statute numbers on the other side. Now, users can sort crimes alphabetically, making it easier to find crimes by name, or they can sort them according to how they appear in the statutes. We also added 17 crimes to the list of possible crimes in West Virginia that the abuser may have committed.
In our Delaware Restraining Orders section, we revised Who can file for an order of protection from abuse? to clarify that the definition of “cohabitation” includes that a child of either or both parties is living in the home as well.
We restructured our Washington Crimes page by creating a chart that lists the crime names on one side and the statute numbers on the other side. Now, users can sort crimes alphabetically, making it easier to find crimes by name, or they can sort them according to how they appear in the statutes. We also added the crimes of “coercion,” “luring,” “trafficking,” and “criminal trespass in the second degree.” All changes made in English and Spanish.

Now, users can sort crimes alphabetically, making it easier to find crimes by name, or they can sort them according to how they appear in the statutes. Now, users can sort crimes alphabetically, making it easier to find crimes by name, or they can sort them according to how they appear in the statutes. We also added the crime of “abuse and neglect of incapacitated adults.” All changes made in English and Spanish.
We restructured our Vermont Crimes page by creating a chart that lists the crime names on one side and the statute numbers on the other side. Now, users can sort crimes alphabetically, making it easier to find crimes by name, or they can sort them according to how they appear in the statutes. We also added eight crimes related to sexual offenses, disturbing the peace, and violating orders.
We restructured our Utah Crimes page by creating a chart that lists the crime names on one side and the statute numbers on the other side.
