Workplace Protections

Federal anti-discrimination laws protect people from being treated unfairly at work because of their:

  • race;
  • color;
  • religion;
  • sex;
  • national origin;
  • age;
  • pregnancy; and
  • disabilities.

Some state laws give even more protection. They may specifically protect victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Many state laws also allow a victim of abuse the right to take time off from work so they can go to court or get help to deal with the abuse. If there is a union at your job, they may also offer additional resources or support services.

Even if there isn’t a specific Workplace Protections section for your state on WomensLaw.org, you can find state and local laws about workplace rights in Legal Momentum’s Employment Laws for Victims of Domestic or Sexual Violence.
