The North Carolina Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) matches attorneys with people who seek attorney referrals. The LRS can give referrals by phone or online. Their website offers self-referral, which is a search for lawyers by legal area and county for people who already know what type they need. The website also offers an option to request a referral, for people who do not know what type of lawyer they need. The LRS member lawyer will charge no more than $50 for an initial 30-minute consultation. Each lawyer sets their own fees for consultations longer than 30 minutes and for ongoing representation.

If you are a victim of abuse, you may want to ask the Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service whether or not they screen for lawyers who are experienced in handling domestic violence cases. For a suggested list of questions to ask regarding the lawyer’s fees and experience when interviewing an attorney, go to our Choosing and Working with a Lawyer page.
