Eastside Legal Assistance Program
The Eastside Legal Assistance Program (ELAP) provides free legal help and resources on civil legal issues to low-income residents in King County. Staff attorneys provide legal services to domestic violence survivors who have been referred to ELAP by a domestic violence program or other service provider. Services offered could include legal advice, help obtaining a protection order, support during court processes, referrals for additional service, and representation in court. ELAP also holds free monthly legal clinics in the county on a variety of topics including domestic violence/family law, housing, immigration, employment, and more. At the domestic violence clinic, they can help draft protection orders and provide one-time legal advice on divorce, custody, and parenting plans. Call their office to make an appointment at one of their legal clinics.
Family Violence Appellate Project
Family Violence Appellate Project (FVAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free legal representation to domestic violence survivors at the appellate level. They focus on cases where trial court decisions leave survivors and their children at serious risk of further abuse. Interpretation and translation services are available. FVAP serves everyone regardless of immigration status.
King County Bar Association Pro Bono Services
The Pro Bono Services department works with volunteer attorneys, paralegals, law students, and community members to provide free legal assistance to eligible, low-income King County residents. Legal advice and services are available in a various areas of law including housing, debt/bankruptcy, family law, and vacating criminal records. Their Domestic Violence Legal Advocacy Project offers direct representation in protection order cases and family law cases; for these services call 211 or ask a domestic violence organization to refer you. Interpreter services are available upon request.
Legal Voice
Legal Voice aims to protect the legal rights of women and LGBTQ people in the Northwest by providing extensive legal information. Their website offers publications and links to resources on legal issues affecting women and families, including gender-based violence, family law, and more.
Neighborhood Legal Clinics
The Neighborhood Legal Clinics program (NLC) offers free, limited legal advice and referrals to eligible King County and Washington residents with legal issues in King County. NLC provides free consultations of 30-60 minutes for civil legal issues with volunteer attorneys. They also hold legal clinics throughout King County for general legal topics, family law, debt/bankruptcy, and civil rights, which are listed on the website. Attorneys will determine whether the client has a legal problem, suggest possible options, and provide referrals if needed. These attorneys will not represent clients in court. Thurston County Volunteer Legal Services (TCVLS) provides free legal advice and information for civil (non-criminal) matters to eligible low-income residents at legal clinics. They can help people solve their own civil legal issue by giving legal advice and a list of next-steps at one of their clinics. Victims of domestic violence and sexual assault receive free legal advice at TCVLS clinics, regardless of income.
