Custody

Do I need a lawyer?

You have the right to file for custody without a lawyer. However, it may be difficult for you to file a proper petition without the help of a lawyer. Also, if the other parent has a lawyer, this will make it more difficult for you to show that the custody arrangement you want is in your child’s best interest.

It is better to have the help of a lawyer if you can get it. If you’re a victim of domestic violence, a lawyer knowledgeable about domestic abuse can be most helpful when seeking custody. Ask any potential lawyer if s/he is familiar with domestic abuse and the behavior patterns of abusers and their victims.
