Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is a lawyer who you can consult with to get advice. Please note that we list the organizations by the town/city or county where the office is located – however, many offices may likely serve multiple counties. The Legal Advocacy Clinic at Roger Williams University
The Legal Advocacy Clinic at Roger Williams University provides court advocacy services to victims of domestic violence in the Newport courthouse on specified days. Court advocacy includes helping clients apply for orders of protection, safety planning, education and referrals. The Clinic does NOT provide legal services. The Clinic presently serves individuals in Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth, Tiverton, Little Compton and Jamestown.
Volunteer Lawyer Program
Rhode Island Bar Association Volunteer Lawyer Program (VLP), provides free legal services to qualified low-income Rhode Islanders. The client’s income must qualify under federally regulated guidelines to receive pro bono assistance, and the case must fall under one of the areas of law handled by the VLP. Clients may be responsible for filing fees, courts costs and other out-of-pocket expenses.
